Temporary Research Assistant
UNC Nutrition Research Institute, Kannapolis, NC
Sangita Sharma, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis seeks a temporary research assistant. This position is part of a team of research staff that conducts research combining nutritional sciences, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, dietary interventions and especially the development of dietary assessment methodologies for multi-ethnic populations. Dietary assessment data are used to (1) determine diet and disease associations, (2) develop nutrition and physical activity intervention programs, (3) assess dietary adequacy, (4) examine nutrient-gene interactions, and (5) monitor nutrition transition. Populations include the Inuit, Inuvialuit, Alaska Natives, Apache, Navajo, First Nations and African-Barbadians, among others. This position will assist in aspects of the research addressing the role of social and behavioral characteristics in dietary intake and physical activity in these populations.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data on the psychosocial and behavioral factors related to diet and physical activity
  • Conceptualizing and writing manuscripts for publication
  • Summarizing relevant literature
  • Assisting with grant preparation and submission


  • Abilities/Knowledge/Skills:
    Knowledge of social and behavioral sciences and ability to program statistical analysis in Stata, SAS, or other statistical programs are required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary, and knowledge of nutrition is highly preferred. We are seeking someone with good teamwork skills, cross-cultural awareness, and experience working in an international research environment. A master’s degree in public health, social and behavioral sciences, nutrition or related degree is required. Wage based on experience.

  • Abilities/Knowledge/Skills:
    (1)Ability to program statistical analysis in SAS or other statistical programs is required along with skills in word processing and graphical software applications, (2) Understanding of methods, procedures, and techniques in nutrition research, (3) Knowledge of nutrition, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary and (4) Experience in a research environment is preferred.

    We are seeking someone with good teamwork skills and cross-cultural awareness. A bachelor’s degree in statistics, epidemiology, nutrition, public health or related field is required and a master’s, or Ph.D, is preferred. Post-Doctoral research fellowships available. Wage based on experience.
